I have a really good reason for just recently jumping on the smoothie train. I hate bananas. It seems like every smoothie calls for one banana, and there is NO chance I’m every going to change my stance on that fruit. I could order one and specify “no banana” but since they seem to be everywhere, I just can’t trust that there wouldn’t be banana remnants in the mixer or touching the other fruit.
There. I said it. I hate bananas, and I learned at an early age that letting people (2 older brothers) know your weakness is a BAD idea. My childhood was plagued with banana peels in my pillowcase and frequent chases involving screams, tears, and that yellow fruit. As recent as last year, my co workers left a banana on my desk and set up a phone to video my reaction. Pretty sure I did not disappoint.
So I set out on a quest to make my own smoothie that did not include a banana and offered nutritional benefits, not just sugar and calories. I have a friend in PA named Steph who taught me a bit about smoothies. She was one of my fabulous gym friends that always brought her “A” game. Since I wanted to be like Steph (and who wouldn’t) I started making smoothies at home because she mentioned she had one most days. She also might have mentioned that she might have added a little Fireball to her afternoon smoothie. And that’s when I knew it was true love.
I knew I wanted to stick with a plant based protein powder. No whey. I’ve tried quite a few different plant based protein mixes, and Vega One Chocolate is my absolute favorite. Pea Protein is the main source as opposed to other brands that use rice. As a self taught know it all, I prefer pea protein. It tastes OK on its own, but the few things I add really take it to the next level and make me feel like I’m indulging in a real milkshake. It’s the perfect beginner protein shake.
Personally, I have not tried it with Fireball, but never say never.

** I have been a big girl and a good mom and always fed my babies bananas even though I was terrified. My son loves banana bread and fortunately my mom used to make it for him and now I have a neighbor that does!
